I’ve been a full-time freelance travel writer specializing in the Southwest for the past dozen years. The vast majority of everything I write is about Arizona. For several years I wrote for Arizona Highways. My work has been featured in USA Today, Go Escape, Budget Travel, Western Art & Architecture, Route 66 Magazine, Elan, Sun Runner and many more.
I’ve been the primary travel writer for the Arizona Republic since 2007. I write the feature for the Explore Arizona section three Saturdays a month covering the state with a variety of stories on road trips, museums, state parks, wildlife refuges, national parks and monuments, ghost towns, hiking trails, restaurants, kayaking, jeep tours, hot air balloons, historic locales, kid-friendly adventures, outings for those with limited mobility, festivals, and just about everything else. I specialize in off the beaten path and little known getaways and always write exclusively about local businesses.
My first book is Arizona Kicks on Route 66. It was released in 2012 and is in its fifth printing. My second book, Death Valley: Hottest Place on Earth, came out the following year and is in its second printing. My latest book is Boots & Burgers: An Arizona Handbook for Hungry Hikers. It came out in November 2014 and went to a second printing in March and is about to go to a third. All three books are from Rio Nuevo Publishers in Tucson.
I travel the state extensively for assignments, speaking engagements and book signings. I put 20,000 miles on my truck last year and it never left the state. I make appearances in towns all across Arizona and am a frequent guest on radio and television. I’m a regular on Tucson Morning Blend. I’ve made multiple appearances on Good Morning Arizona, EVB Live and Arizona Horizon with Ted Simons.
You can watch me every month on Morning Scramble with host Sandy Moss. I file a travel report and also bring a guest chef who whips something up in the kitchen. It’s a good way to promote local restaurants from around the state and bonus: I get fed.
I wrote the cover story for the 2016 Arizona Official State Visitor’s Guide and the cover story for the 2015-2016 Experience Sedona Visitor’s Guide. It’s the second consecutive year I’ve written the cover story for the Sedona guide and I’m already working on a feature for the 2017 Arizona guide.
In 2015, I was the recipient of the Citation of Merit Award from the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association. I was also named Brand Ambassador of the Year by the Sedona Chamber of Commerce.
I’m an avid hiker and have several times made New Year’s resolutions to hike 1,000 miles. I did it most recently in 2013 and wrote a series about it for the Arizona Republic. Even in the years where I’m not pursuing a specific goal, I average 600-800 miles on the trail. I didn’t move to Arizona to sit indoors.
